Hargraves Institute Programs

Hargraves'  core programs centre around Leadership and Innovation, with activities developed at the request of, and in consultation with, members to fulfill these programs.

Members identify a need within their own organisation, however whilst they may have the expertise to design an activity to address this need, by collaborating with Hargraves and other members they take a lead role in designing an enhanced activity that meets their needs in multiple areas.

Hargraves' team are responsible for coordinating and designing the activity with experts and senior staff from member organisations, and take on the role of documenting, implementing and running the activity, allowing members to participate in a new, customised and cost effective program.

During 2012, Hargraves offers a selection of programs specifically designed to address the evolving needs of its members and other enterprises during a period of global and local challenges and change, as follows:

Design & Innovation In The Public Sector

Overview

Investment in public services has increased dramatically over the last decade, but today's services must respond to new challenges including a low carbon economy, climate change, the rapid pace of technological advances, an ageing population, and the rising demands of service users. These pressures make developing innovative solutions essential. Public services must be designed to meet the complex needs of users while delivering cost efficiencies.

Increasing Performance and Impact through Positive Influencing

As the pace of business increases, achieving results and getting things done through others, as well as gaining commitment for your projects and deadlines is ever more challenging. This one day workshop teaches you communication and positive influencing skills that will increase your performance and impact when dealing with colleagues, bosses, customers, partners and suppliers. Positive influencing skills will help you to get people partnering and working with you towards your goals. The ability to adapt quickly and work with anyone to achieve desired results is crucial —especially when you don't have immediate authority to command their cooperation. At this workshop, you'll focus on the key elements of influencing others when there is lack of authority—using personal power, persuasion and negotiation.

Leadership for Innovation

(Designed in conjunction with CSC, ResMed and CCH)

“These days one rarely gets time to take time out to focus on how to strengthen your management and innovation skills. This course has provided me the opportunity to assess and reflect on where and how to improve the skills I use to lead” – CSC

Successful leaders possess many skills, some of which may be inherent, but most have acquired their wisdom through a combination of personal experience, practical learning and the help and advice of others. In this program participants learn the differences between leadership and management and how to develop specific leadership skills that are important to all innovators and technical professionals. It addresses skills needed to lead cross-functional projects, drive thought leadership, and influence others in an innovation role or similar technical role. Participants engage in exercises that assess their individual leadership strengths and provide guidance for further skill development.

Marco Polo Executive Exchange Programme

Background

When Westpac first considered becoming a founding member of Hargraves Institute, this major Australian corporation saw opportunity in the collaborative network that would enable them to launch a new initiative. The innovation leaders at Westpac had been keen to establish an 'experience gathering' executive exchange programme and asked Hargraves to develop this as a member service for all members to share. Westpac had already called their proposed programme the Marco Polo Initiative and Hargraves Institute members agreed this would be a fitting title to adopt.

Systematic Innovation (TRIZ)

(Sourced by Cochlear)

This systematic creativity process consists of four major steps: problem definition, selecting appropriate solution routes, generating solutions and evaluating and selecting the most appropriate course of action. This tool is based on three principles:

  1. Problems and solutions were repeated across industries and sciences
  2. Patterns of technical evolution were repeated across industries and sciences
  3. Innovations used scientific effects outside the field where they were developed
