Delegates at this year’s Conference2013 had the pleasure of hearing The Honourable Andrew Stoner open the day’s proceedings and launch Hargraves’ and Business Skills Australia’s new joint initiative, the Innovation Recognition Program (IRP).

In launching the IRP at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum, which is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, Mr Stoner noted the growing importance of this type of program in an environment where promotion of innovation is vital.

“In a globalised economy, a strong culture of innovation is essential for the growth and even the survival of a nation – or a company. Research indicates a third to one half of all productivity growth is attributable to innovation,” Mr Stoner said.

He also noted the importance of rapid innovation. “Businesses needs to be both ‘first and fastest’ to implement when it comes to innovations. Companies and organisations need to continue investing in their capabilities and skills when it comes to innovation.”

Mr Stoner highlighted to delegates the commitment the NSW State Government had made to support innovation in the state.

However, many innovations are old ideas re purposed for a new application. Success is about actioning ideas, both old and new. So the challenge now is to come up with practical ways to realize the vision.

The 2012 holiday season proved to be a stark revelation of the upcoming challenges for our economy, governments and companies in 2013.

2012 concluded with the Federal Government delivering a multitude of ideas, report results and renewed promises for the coming year. The Asian Century Report detailed yet more objectives to allow Australian companies to benefit from Asian economic growth and displayed how much the Australian economy has, by comparison, slowed. Likewise, the various adverse productivity report showcased Australia’s noticeable slump in productivity and ultimately, the government’s credibility was further called to question with the elimination of the surplus after countless assurances to the contrary.
